Hi! I'm Dr Petra. I'm a psychologist based at University College London and I research sex and relationships. Fire away and ask me what you need to know. Don't be embarrassed - I'm here to sort out all your awkward, personal, and just plain confusing problems |

| Whenever I have a thing with a guy, like at a party or something, and I think I like him, I then go off them the next day and I don’t know why. Please help because I recently have liked this guy for ages and now he likes me as well but I’v gone off him! I think maybe it has something to do with the fact that I don’t like change, or I’m scared about what people will think, or I just like the thrill of the chase? |

| It could be the thrill of the chase, or it might be you’ve not met anyone who you really like yet. There’s no problem in continuing to search for someone you fancy, and it’s okay if you don’t always like them much once you get to know them. You may want to think about if there’s any reason why you go off guys – for example some people do this if they feel deep down the relationship wouldn’t work or nobody would fancy them – it’s a means of protecting themselves from rejection. Can you see a reason for this pattern? Is there something about these guys that puts you off? Try thinking about if there is a real reason behind your reason for rejecting them. But if you feel confident in yourself just trust in your instincts and don’t stop looking! |
