The Pitch

Nick, who regularly frequents New York’s indie rock scene, has just been dumped by his seriously-out-of-his league girlfriend, Tris. It’s in the midst of his heartbreak that Nick meets Norah, a quirky gal who needs him to pose as her boyfriend to make her ex jealous. Though the two have nothing in common apart from astounding taste in music, their chance meeting leads to an all night quest split between two treasures – desperately seeking their favourite band, Where’s Fluffy, in a secret show and tracking down Norah’s drunken best friend Caroline. In less than 24-hours their adventure becomes the kind of first date that could change both their lives.

The Talent

We fell in love with the impossibly cute Michael Cera in Juno and seeing him again as Nick only confirms our crush on the geeky star!  The 40 Year Old Virgin’s Kat Dennings plays the adorable Nora and the on-screen chemistry between the two leads had us thinking that maybe they took their work home!

The Verdict

Instead of being the run-of-the-mill boy-meets-girl tale, Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist is a revolutionary film disguised as a familiar story.  The film’s soundtrack is achingly modern and hip – including bands like Vampire Weekend and Bishop Allen - and is complete with enough quirky performances to keep it out of cheesy romcom territory.  However, while there may be a focus on the music, director Pete Sollett and writer Lorene Scafaria never lose focus of Nick and Norah’s budding relationship.  This is an effortlessly funny and charming film about music and an odd couple struggling to get it on – you won’t be able to wipe the smile from your face.
