Easy Virtue (PG)
The Pitch This fabulously British comedy sees John Whittikar, a privileged young Englishman who has been gallivanting around the French Riviera, return home to his stuck up family. He brings with him his new wife, Larita, a flamboyant American woman who epitomises everything John’s family is not. John’s stern mother is the first to dig her heels in about the presence of Larita, causing huge disruptions in the family home. As the gloves come off this really is a battle of wills between the two women leaving poor John torn between them.
The Talent Australian director, Stephen Elliot, who last had glory 14 years ago with his film, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, has come back to claim it once more with this impeccably directed film. Jessica Biel gives the best performance of her career so far as stubborn Larita and super handsome Ben Barnes who we last saw in Prince Caspian provides the eye candy. Colin Firth is the film’s highlight though – his quick witted comedy had us in stitches.
The Verdict Where so many adaptations go wrong, Easy Virtue flourishes. Instead of being a stuffy costume drama, the mixture of old and new together with quick fire dialogue results in a highly watchable comedy. Go see!
