Your Question
dear Dr petra,
around last october i kissed a boy about the same age as me at a college party, i didn't know him, and i dont know of anybody there that knew him either, he came with a few friends. there were a few people let it that shouldn't have been. i have been worried ever since about whether i caught HIV, it sounds abit dramatic but i need some questions answered to put my very worried mind at ease. i have read that you cannot get HIV from kissing somebody, open-mouthed/snogging or on the cheek, unless there is blood involved, is this correct? if so, i could be at risk i dont know if he had a coldsore or an open cut in or around his mouth, and i cant remember if i did. was this a high risk situation?? should i got to a doctor to get a test?, I'am really worried and i dont want a nurse to think im a very dramatic 17 year old, so i came here first. please reply im VERY worried
Dr Petra's Response
Please don’t worry. You can’t get HIV from kissing someone. Even if he had a cut or coldsore and was HIV positive it’s very unlikely he would pass on the virus unless you had an open cut too. So I really wouldn’t worry. If you want more information on HIV you can get it from Avert http://www.avert.org.
